Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
