Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the option to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
