This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a intense meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that come with any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
