The star has donated the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to preserve the United Kingdom's independent live music spots.

The star was given the cheque on mid-October as his new release the album was chosen as the best record of the last 12 months.

Fender has opted to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the essential function small stages played in his early career.

"I personally would not have achieved what I am doing today if it weren't for all the performances I played around the North East, and further afield, when I was beginning," said Sam Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have shut down – roughly 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, major artists including Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to support the industry, by including a modest fee to their ticket costs, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

He also joined in, generating in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to support 38 grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation helped venues that were dealing with imminent closure due to issues arising from floods, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Additional spaces were granted financial assistance in improving infrastructure and technical equipment that directly benefitted musicians and fans.

"The notion that funds from concerts in major spaces backs the smaller venues, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just logical," Fender has commented.

Two years ago, the band gave their funds to the local youth club that developed their act, as well as other independent music bodies.

And the 1994 recipients the group donated their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was diagnosed the illness.

"Winning was quite enough," said vocalist the singer. "The cash was the extra but we didn't require the extra, because we had the main prize. So our victory impacted somebody else's life."

Recently, the trust revealed it had saved a couple of small stages in that region, by bringing them into local control.

One venue in the city and The Croft in Bristol were bought under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is supported by Arts Council England and supporters who purchase "shares" in the buildings.
