EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
